The BUILD program at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) held their annual BUILD Summer Research Symposium on Sept. 10, 2021, on the CSULB campus. This was the program’s first in-person event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
BUILD has held research symposiums as the culminating event for the Summer Undergraduate Research Gateway to Excellence (SURGE) Program. Last year’s symposium took place as a virtual event. Fortunately for the CSULB BUILD community, students presented their work in-person at the start of the fall semester and even invited their friends and family to the event.
The symposium included two hour-long poster sessions with 31 poster presentations to an audience of about 100 people. Following health and safety guidelines from the campus, the event was held outdoors to allow social distancing, and attendees were provided with grab-and-go snacks and beverages.
“The annual research symposium is often students’ first opportunity to present a research poster and gives them a boost of confidence as they begin their research career,” Nicole Streicker said. “This year, students had the opportunity to share their hard work and research with their peers, loved ones, and the campus community. This event is especially meaningful to the BUILD staff and faculty, as it provides an opportunity for us to engage with students’ loved ones.”
The event also allowed CSULB BUILD to welcome two new campus leaders to the community: the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Karyn Scissum Gunn, Ph.D., and the Dean of the College of Engineering, Jinny Rhee, Ph.D.
