On January 19th UCSF hosted SF BUILD's mentor meeting. The workshop included multiple presentations featuring suggestions on how mentors could help develop productive relationships with their mentees. Below are a couple of thoughts mentors shared during the meeting.

“Were excited about this particular partnership between San Francisco State University (SFSU) and UCSF because SFSU is a strong university with a tradition of training underrepresented minority undergraduates, UCSF is an institution research intensive that values training as well, and together we think this partnership, both strong universities in the same city, can yield positive results.”

"The goal is to help them become a great mentee. Part of what we’re doing is making the unwritten rules more apparent and enhancing people’s ability to deal with what are ultimately complex and often intimidating environments.” -Dr. Alicia Fernandez SF BUILD

Dr. Teaster Baird shared that it is important to recognize that working with people who have very different perspectives may lead to unnecessary tense and uncomfortable situations. He also noted that taking time to clarify that what is heard is what is meant is really valuable in building strong mentor-mentee relationships.
