Mentor Portrait: Jan. 2021 National Mentoring Month Q&A with Annica Wayman, Ph.D.

  1. Tell us a bit about your background; for example, when did you become interested in science and what was the reason? Was there a mentor who helped you on your education and/or career pathway?

I realized my interest in engineering in high school. I actually started my STEM pursuits at UMBC. I was a Meyerhoff Scholar and received my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following that, I completed my PhD at Georgia Tech where I did biophysics research. I had lots of mentors along the way, most of whom were from underrepresented groups like me. People like Dr. Freeman Hrabowski and Earnestine Baker, who began their support of me as a Meyerhoff, have been lifelong mentors.

  1. How have you supported your mentees during the pandemic?

We met as a small group monthly during the semester via video calls. While each meeting had a topic to discuss, I started each meeting asking about their well-being. I also sent emails to check in especially during finals.

  1. What is something valuable that your mentees have taught you?

That students are really striving and fighting to excel despite the challenging circumstances. They deserve a lot of credit for that. They also need our care and support.
