ASCEND excels in producing well-rounded, biomedical researchers that are familiar with the root causes of health and health disparity problems and are highly competent to address them. Read about two accomplished ASCEND alumni applying their skills and knowledge to their post-undergraduate scientific careers.
NASHAE PROUT | B.S. in health education
Nashae Prout, a member of ASCEND Cohort 5, graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Science in health education with a concentration in environmental health and a minor in biology.
Upon graduating, she founded Us Black Girls In Science, a social media/internet-based page focused on increasing the visibility of black women and femmes in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine (STEMM) fields. For future research, Prout aims to work in a laboratory combining both basic bench research and surveillance techniques. She is currently a Toxicology Ph.D. Student at University of Rochester.
LAYSCHEL KEMP | B.S. in psychology
Layschel Kemp, another member of ASCEND Cohort 5, earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology. Her ASCEND research contributed to mental health awareness.
For the past year, she has been vigorously working as a clinical research assistant in College Park Maryland at the University of Maryland. Kemp currently holds an interest in anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and health disparities.
